Ok you guys help me decide

Well I have been so close to getting a new o8 its not even funny but I keep putting it off. I am even thinking off getting a V 10 instead. Figuring it would be cheaper to run per mile vs the diesel. I have a 2003 7.3 PSD. The best Ford truck I have ever had its been flawless. I want to upgrade. Tell me what to do. V 10 or 6.4. My main worry is the mileage with these new trucks. Input wanted guys. Thanks in advance for your help an advice.

150ford,

What are you going to do with her? If you are going to tow or haul heavy I personally do not think you can beat the 6.4.

I have not driven the gasser so I don't know what it is getting for mileage vs the diesel.

I was just toying with the idea myself,,,,I have been looking online,,,at whats in my area,,,Was really thinking about a V-10 again myself,,Diesel cost more, seems like many issues with the DPF on the 6.4,,,the V-10 is an awsome engine ,,and I would think with the Torqshift trans behind it,,and 4:30's,,,,,,Would be a BADA$$ TRUCK !! Not that a 6.4 would'nt be BADA$$ either,,,Just alot more $$.
At this time my 06' F-350 six-0 has treated me so good,,I decided to hold off for now and see what that 6.7 Scorpion is going to be like !

PS,,I did find a few V-10's !

I have an 08 F350, with the V10, and the 4.30s.... and it IS a hell of a truck. During the summer, I am averaging 12.5-13. The MPG is the big killer on these new trucks, with the diesels. I had looked at a diesel in the beginning, but the cost differential, as well as the crappy MPG... it was a no brainer for me. I have tossed around the ideas about moving back to an F150 (due to the economy)... but I try to keep positive, and thinking I can swing this new one.

I would stay with the v-10 if anything because of the cost. Or maybe lack there of. I was a happy 6.0 owner, went to a v-10 and gettin happier everyday. It pulls my 31 TT like nothing at all. Will the diesel pull better absolutely! But the operating cost doesn't justify it to me, because I'm not pulling everyday. If I was pulling everyday, I would have kept my diesel

as a 6.4 owner I can tell you I get 13 city and 16-18 hwy at 65 mph this is emtpy. When pulling around 11.5 that is with 10,000 trailer and goodies, and at 70 mph.

To me the diesel was more cost effective per mile, but I had a 06 F250 with the 5.4 3.73 gears.

Good luck finding a new V-10. I've been looking all over the southwest and can find only PSD's.

It totally depends on how you use the pedal.

If you step on the pedal it will get you there with a quickness but you will burn the fuel with a quickness.

I have a F350 DRW CC with 4.30 RE and I get up to 14 and change if I drive light on the pedal. This includes highway travel up to 65mph.

When I am pulling 15,000lbs I get about 9 mpg if I stay at 65 mph.

The mileage varies quite a bit based on the configuration and how you drive it. Its going to be a bit of a drop from your 7.3 but you also have more power and the torqshift trans. You havent stated your purpose for the truck yet. The V10 is very capable for a lot of applications but if you are hauling over 10k and plan on lots of hills I would suggest the 6.4. My friends V10 does a great job until we hit a hill. He went from a 6.0 PSD to the V10 so he really feels the difference more than someone who isnt used to driving a diesel all the time.
If your main concern is mileage, there isnt a huge difference between the V10 and 6.4 (slight advantage to the 6.4) so I think you need to look at your secondary concern to make your final decision.

Yeh Thanks for the help. I will be pulling a 24ft goosneck livestock trailor on occassion. Sounds like the V 10 might fit the bill. If I was pulling everyday i would get the diesel. Is your friends V 10 the new 3 valve. Again thanks for all the input guys. Really helps. An more input is welcome.

If you are going to use the truck as a grocery getter, get the V10. If you are going to be pulling anything that requires torque and horsepower, get the Diesel. The v10 is fine if you live in Illinois (flat). If you have hills or worse yet mountains forget it, the Diesel is the only way to go unless you are really patient.

As for the DPF, I don't think that people are having issues with it for the most part except for the crappy mileage it causes and the notification of the regen recall which was a fiasco. Yes there have been failures but not so many that it is a big deal. REalistically, once the thing goes bad, I would remove it anyway and then there will be no question in which truck I would want.

It's all about whether you tow big weight or not. I very rarely tow but do often haul big (3,000lbs+) so I don't need 650lb/ft. However, if I had need for a fifth wheel installed I'd have jumped on the deals on these 6.4L. Yes, the fuel is expensive, but discounts mean the price of the derv engine ends up about the same as an ordered V10. Not sure of the weight of your trailer but, as others said, over 10k which I'm sure your is loaded I'd prefer the diesel. Now, for me the cheap 87AKI gas was too tempting to ignore...

i have a 26' flatbed goose neck and have pulled (counting the weight of the trailer, 4,500lbs) 21,000lbs a few times for about 25miles on the interstate. i pull it with my 250 with the 6.4 and get around 10mpg. and can get 14mpg's empty mixed city and hwy.
