I have a 99 Explorer that is giving me trouble. Tumbler switch is not working right. Won't lock all doors and will only open all when you turn it twice. I just replaced the power door lock actuator thinking this would fix the problem but to no avail.Could the wire contacts on the switch mounted on the tumbler assembly be the culprit?? If so how much does one of these go for? I also need to know if anyone has had trouble with the door latch receiver? It will not unlock sometimes. acts like it is jammed and won't move till it is move by force or banging on the door to get it loose. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I had the door latch problem on my 1998. Took the door panel off, found a broken spring in the latch. In a hard-to-get-to location. Keeps tension on a horizontal linkage rod with a yellow plastic fitting on one end. Sorry it's been a couple years, I'm having trouble picturing it in my head -- should've taken pictures.
A replacement latch would fix it, but what I did was, use a longer spring (had one lying around the garage), stretched it past the latch to a good spot on the door frame, used a fish hook (4/0 kahle hook, as I recall).
I'm having the same problem on my 98 explorer with the drivers door not unlocking completly. You have to go to the passenger side, unlock it, then reach through and jiggle the handle until it pops up. Hopefully someone replies becuze I could use some help too!! (electric locks)
I fixed my problem. It was a return spring on the actuator lever inside the housing. There is a very little spring that is connected to a lever that pivots to lock or unlock the door with the key which was broken due to rust. This lever when it has tension on it from the spring will allow the key to do it job but if the spring is not there then the lever locks in to place and will only unlock the door for it cannot go back to it return position. All I did was stretch the spring and made a new elbow joint on it to connect it to the inside housing and it now works fine. You just have to figure out how the spring goes back in. I had a hell of a time trying to figure it out. But I found that it was not that hard. If you need an example just look at your passenger door and it will show you where it goes. Now the vehicle locks and unlocks with the key perfectly. Hassle gone. GOOD LUCK
