So i noticed this winter that the paint on my hood and drivers side is really starting to peel badly. Is there anything I can do to stop/slow this down? Or anything that can be done to make it look better without a new paint job? Has anyone else had this happen? Truck in question is a 1996 150
Well, I'm no body man and don't claim to be but Is that red primer under the paint or is it the clear coat flaking off? If it is then I'd say that the primer was not adequately cleaned before laying down the red base coat. And unfornately I'm not aware of any means of stopping the peeling effect, just try and maintain the finish on the rest of the truck in hopes that the damage doesn't spread.
Thats the clear coat. Im a novice painter. The only way you can make it less noticeable is sand it with 400 grit or higher but your risking burning through the base coat which is the red color espeacialy on the corners or grooves in the truck. If your careful us a DA sander with 400 or higher then buff with a buffer. I would just sand the areas and repaint it. You would only need a quart of each base/clear the sanded area should act as a good enough primer well sanded, and wait till you get a 40 plus degree day or it will run off like molasses.
Is the truck normally garaged?? Did you wax the paint before the damage occurred??
No the truck is always outside. It was waxed over the summer, but the clear has been coming off for some time now..just seemed like it got really bad all of a sudden and a ton came off right at once. Anyway I had some clear coat laying around in the garage and I just sprayed it right on top of a bit of the hood and it did help a bit..ill do a bit of sanding and spraying tomorrow and see what happens..im not too concerned with perfection here but would like it to look decent
