Tranny Service

I have a 96 F350 5spd. What kind of tranmission fluid does that call for and what is a good additive, I have a weak syncro at 3rd gear? I changed the fluid yesterday but it has gotten worse, and now it grinds into 3rd and 4th..I need to get the right fluid in there.

The manual calls for synthetic ATF but Redline MTL works real well with bad syncros. And if you pull the shift tower and overfill it by 1 quart that works even better.

It should take mercon ATF. not sure on what additive will help.

What do you guys suggest, only third gear grinds about every 10th shift. My mechanic drained the tranny yesterday but only about 4 quarts came out, he refilled with some synthetic, not it grinds sometimes in 3rd and 4th.

I would do what BlueMule said. Get the redline stuff and fill till its full then pull the shifter and add one more quart.

A lot of guys overfill it to quiet the gear rollover noise that comes with a single mass flywheel.
