I have a '84 F-150 4X4 with a 300 six. The front end seems to have a sway or slack in the front end. I have replaced the wheel bearings, shocks, tie rod ends, and tires and wheels. I've adjusted all the play out of the steering gear box but there is still alot of sway or loose feel in the frontend. Will the springs cause this or any of the bushings? The truck has 33/12.50x15 and no steering stabilizer but it does have power steering. Has anyone experienced this problem? I appreciate all your help.
WSJ, yes the radius arm bushings can and or weak coil springs can cause the truck to wander around. Check the ball joints also. The top ones like to wear out on these trucks. Its been my experience with the TTB front end they tend to wander some with big tires. But be sure and check the above items.
my truck has 33" tires, but it also has sway bars, front and rear. when i'm driving straight, the truck wanders, but man, those sway bars really help the truck handle almost as good as my car in the corners, even with the high center of gravity.
Does your truck have a lift? If so check the center axel pivot drop brackets and the radius arm drop brackes to make sure the bolts are tight. Mine got a little loose and it felt like I was trying to ballance on a basket ball while I was driving. While your under there check all the rubber bushings to see if there worn. Just try to pry on the part with a crowbar and see it it moves excessivly.
Check the steering coupler located between the steering colum and the gear box, they is a round rubber piece that looks like it was cut from a a tire, this wears out or tears and causes the problems you described. A repair kit is available at many auto parts for about $10.00 or the entire coupler is available from Ford for about $120.00
