How can I tighten my shifter...ie..p-r-n-d-3-2.. on a 2004 f250. It is loose and not tight like it was when it was newer.I can get the cover off the bottom but can not get the ignition off the column to get the top part off...Any help is greatly appreciated....
To remove the lock cylinder put the key in and turn it to the run position under the column where the cover is there should be an extra hole with no screw in it take a small screw drive and push up in the hole there is a release in there.
Ditto that! Mine had two torx bolts. One had actually fallen out. Put it back in and secured it with some lock-tite. Never had another problem. Note: Don't use the lock-tite that you have to heat to release, the weakest kind will do.
Mine became sloppy because it had been dry for some time and actually started removing material. I used some shim stock to take up the slope and lubricated it with some moly lube. Been tight for two years so far.
i tightened the two torx bolts and still sloppy. ill try removing the ignition swith tomorrow and seeing if i can get it tight there. any other ideas are much appreciated. how tough is it to get the ignition switch back in after i take it out????..thanks
I bought a plastic bushing from Ford that keeps the shifter from moving around near the steering column, but have yet to install it. I too had a torx head screw fall out and rendered the shifter useless(couldn't find any gear), and figured it must be loosening up again, but that wasn't the case. I think over time, the plastic bushing must have cracked and worked itself out leaving a lot of slop. I can find the part number if you need it.
