I was going to bring that up. My 310 SG has ether start aid button. I always hated using ether to start equipment because they seem to become dependent on it over time. The only time I have used it on my backhoe is when it is out on a site w/o power to plug it in during the winter months. Has not seemed to have a negative impact on it, but I think I have only used it a dozen times in 2500 hours.

if you use ether conservatively then its as good as anything else. wd40 may be more forgiving.

Its a great machine. The only issues with it has been a starter. I agree as being one of the best. It is a very solid machine. Only minor complaint I can say I have is checking the oil, hood can be a pita sometimes. Wish the hood had an access hole like the E models.

I've seen out in Iraq some generator mechs would soak a rag in gasoline and hold the rag in the intake tube (after removing the air filter) while cranking a big Cat genny to get it started.

That's how the mechanic at the corner from my house has been starting his 82 chevy tow truck, it has the 6.2L in it.

It always makes me wonder after I read "NO ETHER" just why they make ether?
They sell cases of it here , you see big stacks of it in auto parts stores.
Must make it to spray mean dogs in the face because everyone says not to use it on engines?

My Grandfather used to carry a can in his back pocket whenever he went out, just in case he was gonna get mugged LOL. But then again he was walking around in Brooklyn, so I can't blame him...

I don't see whay it "wouldn't" work, but it's probably got more explosive force than diesel...

I think if you used propane you would have to use it in a regulated small amount. Not sure what that is though. I've heard of people using it on a regulated system.

Ether is used for starting gasoline engines, not diesels. Thats why they sell so much of it. Works wonders on small motors. If you're out of gas and only have a couple feet of lawn to mow... spray it till your done.

jack your totally wrong, ether while it can be used in a gas engine was made for starting compression ignition engines. im not trying to start any argument but ive never seen a factory gasoline engine with a ether start aid. they were (and still are for some manufacturers) a diesel start aid. the combustion pressures in a gas engine from ether will cause damage. very few si engines are able to handle ether without doing extensive damage and wear. even the compression ring in an si engine isnt designed for that kind of pressure.

just because it works doesnt mean its good for it. stick to the wd40 for a gasser. better yet fill the tank or fix the problem...lol
