I have a 90 5.8 in an F150 w/ over 200K. I was told it has a bad headgasket, it runs good until it gets warmed up and has coolant in the oil. Gaskets are cheap, my question is, how likely is it that its just a bad gasket and not a cracked head or block?
I bought this truck for an engine swap (it has a perfect body) but for the time being I may just dig into the engine and make it driveable for awhile.
I dont know any history on the truck but by looking at its condition I'd say it was taken care of by the origional owner.
I tried to sell the engine on Ebay but no one bid on it, I figured it would at least bring a couple hundred.
The Ford castings are pretty good so chances are it's just the gasket. If the head is cracked you should be able to find another cheap, all 5.0 and 5.8 truck motors after '87 used the same heads, you just have to bore out the holes on a 5.0 head to 1/2" to put it on a 5.8 block. I've done this myself in minutes on a drill press, no big deal at all.
this is one of those deals you just have to dive into and inspect the gaskets as you work your way down. i would for sure get this fixed as coolant in the oil isnt good for the bearings and such.
I'm sure its a gasket, I get white smoke out the tailpipe and the truck wont stay running at idle sometimes. I'm not driving it, I bought it from a neighbor this fall for $500 and its been sitting in the drive ever since. I was going to part it out but when I went to look at it I realised that its a rust free body and the interior is almost perfect! I figured that its worth fixing for now to get a second vehicle going, the full headgasket gasket set is only $70.00. I can port the heads while I'm in there and I have a dual exhaust system laying around that can be installed. Cheap transprotation for awhile.
