cold advance - is it really needed?

I decided to do an experiment today, and unplugged the cold-advance harness off the solenoid in the IP, then proceeded to starting the truck. It was 20F outside, truck was not run for over 20 hours, and it did not receive its regular block heater treatment either. It felt like it started easier, ran smoother, and didn't smoke anywhere near as much as it does normally at similar ambient temperatures. Fast idle worked like it always does, no issues there. I remember several folks here posting similar results, which was what got me to try it in the first place. Anyone here exprienced the same thing? Any idea as to why it is like it is? My IP is advanced over stock timing, so that may have something to do with it?

No, it is not needed.

With stock timing it does help the engine start.

But with the advanced timing it works against it? Judging by the amounts of unburn fuel in the exhaust, and the duration of cranking before startup, and the idle quality while still dead-cold...

I have it disconnected on my truck and on all the ones I had in the past but I also always advance my IP. Always seems to start and sound better when cold.
