FICM Question

so i've had red in once before, last spring, for a heavy vibration, namely through the steering wheel. took it to the dealer at home and they replaced front ball joints and a wheel bearing. came to NY for the summer, everything is mostly fine, get some but not a lot. now that it's winter up here, i started getting it again real bad. just hit 70k, and my ESP only goes to 75k, so i figured it was time to take it in.

it generally vibrates: when the engine is cold. get 10 miles down the road, and it's ok. shifting into OD, so above 40 MPH. it's worse when the cruise is set, and worse when it starts pulling a bit.

took it to the dealer last monday and had to actually drive over there to find out WTF was going on, they didn't call me. but the tech tells me he's pretty sure it's the FICM. he's supposed to know for sure today. he checked my OASIS and says it's been having the same problem since it was new. i looked at the oasis i got on it 8 months ago, and sure enough i see what he's talking about now. so he doesn't just want to throw parts at it.

does any of this sound familiar or normal to anybody else? just curious cos i've seen a few others with vibration problems and 'm going to have to brave the snow storm and go get the pickup today so i can go back to school friday and bring it back next weekend so they get get new parts on it while i'm at drill.

The FICM or the fuel injector control module has a separate output for every injector on in the engine. My neighbor had one replaced because of rough idle. It was not real bad and it never triggered a trouble code but he could feel the difference. They replaced the FICM and it cured the problem. Could be this mechanic knows what he is doing.

My truck had a rough idle and got harder and harder to start until I had the ficm replaced. I did not have a vibration though.

I had an escort as a loaner car one time. I was practically eatin my kneecaps it was a tight fit. I don't imagine a focus would be all that much better for me.

well, it's not so bad in the driver seat for me. but i'm 5'10ish, 220. mother in law is a straight 5'0, it's great for her, and the bro-in-law seemed ok (6'4). but the sig other got in the back and was immediately bitching about it...

ok, so they actually replaced the injector control pressure sensor and connector and it did NOT fix my problem. the tech said when he had it hooked up to the computer and was monitoring it, he could SEE it in the voltage but couldn't figure it out. and he acknowledged that there was still something there when i picked it up last friday.

I have heard that a FICM is around $800 and Ford is experiencing a supply issue (changing suppliers I believe).

i dunno. they said something to me about 600 bucks and that there would be another week before they'd get the FICM, had that been the "problem."

FICM's come unprogrammed. After purchase you have to have the dealership or one of only a few aftermarket businesses program it. Spartan can program it and I have heard of at least one other - can't remember who.

I would not install an Ebay FICM that came pre-programmed. I would think it could cause problems.

seems to be a lot of FICM's going out lately. mine was replaced yesterday at warranty coverage. i wonder if poor fuel or extreme temps. played any part?
