Exclamation 4x4 Trouble

Hi all, I am having problems with my 4 x 4 in the automatic setting. When I throw the switch sometimes it will engage and sometimes it wont. I read somewhere if your having problems with a vacuum leak to throw your heater on and engage your 4 x 4 and if it switches to defrost that you have a leak. My question is how do you know if it is my front axle seals or the vacuum pump? I am getting a light on the dash but it is not engaging in less I get out and throw the hubs into manual position. Any help is greatly appreciated. The dealer wants around $100.00 to test it. But you all know how tight $$$ is this time of the year!! Thanks in advance.....Mike

Check out this post re: ESOF. May or may not be the case with yours but worth a try. Search a little further in the SD forum as there have been several recent posts on this. Good luck.

Mike, I had this same problem, yes it's true when you have a vaccum leak your floor heat will switch to defrost when you start driving on 4H. It will take about 1/4 to 1/2 mile and you will see the changes. I went under my truck today and followed all my lines. I notice one of my line was disconnected. After I hooked up the lines everything started to work correctly. Check your lines first and make sure there is no breaks in tube and connections. If everthing check out in your line then it might be the pump. also don't forget to check your fuses. I can't believe it was a disconnected tube. I hope this helps..
