Yeah, getting them out can be a job, they sieze in there tight. I had to cut it out with a hammer and chistle. You couldn't use that method on todays aluminum engines.
I have a two word answer for any problem like that.. "acetylene torch". The most underutilized tool in many shops...
I had Ukrainia Tavria... Tried to turn plug with hammer and plug went in block and stayed there forewer.... car was sold in 2002 and still runs with pulg inside engine.....

Far as I know, I don't think they will ever obsolete freeze plugs or equivalent in ICE engines. Yeah, 2.9L has freeze plugs. The whole bit about pulling them from aluminum blocks (not a concern with Limas or Colognes) has my hair a bit frazzled though. Really glad they push high-grade coolant & distilled water with such tenacity for aluminum blocks.
