Buring oil Issues

Hello everyone,

I have a 05 Ford Expedition with 46,000 miles. I been burning about 1.5 to 2 quarts of oil every 5000 miles. Is this normal for this SUV. I also have a 06 Ford F250 with a 5.4L engine and within 5000 miles I only lose about 1/2 quart of oil. I took my SUV in to the dealers and told me that this is normal on this expedition. Also it states on their TSB/ford report that it is normal to burns about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I think that is crazy. It just seems that ford is hidding a problem on the SUV. I have the same engine in my truck and I don't have that problem. Could this problem be something else.

Also, the type of oil I was using was syntheitc first then I went to Blend and I still have the same problem with both type of oil. They both burn the same amount which was odd.

Ford does not need to get Bail out. They just need to bring back quality into their products again and back it up with a 6year/10000 mile warranty bumper to bumper.

Thanks

Yeah my 03 Expy burns about a quart every 1500 miles. That doesn't make me happy at all.

As a former Expedition owner here is what I can say about the 5.4L burning oil.

My 2003 was buring about 1qt every 3k.......at 56K the engine blew while going down the highway at 70mph.

My 2005 was burning about 1 qt every 3k at 57K....didn't stick around to see how it turned out. I got rid of her and went to another manufacturer.

My oil consumption was evident on start up when I would see the puffs from the exhaust. Went to Ford and was given the same story....perfectly normal on a 5.4L engine. This is the biggest reason I do not have an Expedition anymore (and I have owned 4 of them since 2000 so the "you just got a bad one" doesn't really apply). This seems to be something that the 5.4 does....2 friends with F150's have the same issue at around the same mileage.

Good luck. I ran and am so happy I did. I was honestly amazed at the difference in build qualities out there.

My 2002 goes through a quart about every 3,000 miles. I have 105,000 miles on her now and no problems, other than the oil burning.

Really, 2k to 3K for a quart is not burning oil. Try under 1K for a problem. I've been around cars and trucks to know that Chevy Vegas and older 4 cyl mustangs and Pintos burned oil. 1980's BMW 323's. Later it is the Crown Vics 92-on with the 4.6 V8. Anyone of these fine examples would burn a quart of oil every 100-500 miles. My 04 Ex with 88k mile will use 1 quart every 3k. My 99 Toyota Corolla with 165k uses a quart every 3k-4k miles.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for the input. I guess a quart and half is not bad every 5000 miles for this SUV. It just seem to be alot for this SUV. I quess I'm safe this SUV has 7 qts of oil capacity. It just strange that my F250 burns only 1/2 qts every 5000 miles.

Thanks,

My brother has a 2002 F-250 with the 5.4. He said his uses 1/2 a quart every 3000 or so. I've heard and read that the modular engines are designed to use a little oil between changes, and what your Ford dealer told you is correct, in that oil consumption is normal.

Some of you may notice this as well like with my 99 5.4, sometimes it may be a 1/2 quart in 3000 miles or a quart and a half the next time, never really consistent.

burnin' oil on th 5.4

My2000 has 194,000 and I just noticed it burning on start-up. I blogged on this forum about it and was told that if its on start-up then it is the valve seals that are worn. This was also seconded by my mechanic.
