Hi, all...I have a 2001 Excursion 7.3, bone stock. I live in New England...It's been cold on and off lately. When I start it (even after block heater all night), it immediately starts and runs at an idle of about 7-800. It sounds like I think it should. After awhile, the idle kicks up to 1000+. It kicks down if I touch the accelerator, but then climbs back up. Is this normal? It even happens after the temp. gauge is in the "normal" range. I'm pretty new to these engines, so thanks in advance for the help.
Most definately, it's just the engine trying to warm up a little faster.
Diesel engines don't like the cold very much until they're warmed up. So in order to keep them warm and warm them up faster, the PCM slightly closes the exhaust backpressure valve on the turbo and high idles the engine. This effectively warms the engine up and gets the oil flowing much better than just idling at the normal RPMs.
Once it's warm, the ebpv opens as the engine is now up to temp and able to maintain it's proper operating temp easier. It's may close again to keep the engine warm if it's just that cold.
