Smart money says -
If you see anything important enough to get at a scrapper, make a bid on the whole car or truck.
A "Dime at a Time" will pilfer your pockets dry...
See if you can get the whole wreck, then part out everything you can and drop off the remains at the same place.
-Or a different one, so they don't get wise to ya....
The best way to go is to look for a donor vehicle, but again -
Why pay top dollar for a hoof, when you can have the whole hog?
Funny you say that Grey. I just put in a bone yard radiator. I was a little nervous because it was 3/4 of the way out. But the guy said that if it was bad I could bring it back for another. Lucked out & it works fine (knock on wood).
One thing I would not buy is a wiring harness with burn marks :P
I went to a junk yard in 1988 to get an interior for my 1980 mustang 4 banger, I was only 20. well i was given permission to take it out myself, the junkyard forman like the way i worked so he gave me a job, worked there for 4 years. ive never been back.
my motto,
"if ya gotta pay take it away, if its free then thats for me"
well my 2 cents here (ill have to write you an i.o.u. cuzz i gave it to the bully at school to leave me alone)lol
i will buy just about anything neede at the junkyard ofcourse depending on price but will walk away from major parts that have the power of whether i am able to drive the truck or not unless the boneyard is my only option .other than that small parts leave in the toolbox or pockets i have to admit but things that i want or need i will gat from there bc they also go with the 30 day replacement policy
Hey, what can I can I say...I'm cheap! I like scrounging around the wrecking (junk) yard. And with a 30 day replacement warranty or credit, if it don't work I'll take it back and buy new. Some of the things I've picked up at the wrecking yard for my '75' F350 truck in the last eight months include...
Smog componets. Passed smog inspection, whew!
Power steering pump. Works good.
Carburator. Rebuilt it, works good.
Fuel pump and fuel tank selector switch....like I said, I'm cheap.
Heater core. No leaks, cab is warm as toast.
Almost new fan clutch. Spare part, couldn't pass it up.
Rear supercab windows. Also spare parts, because you never know.
A set of 16" rims with tires.
A set of D0VE-C heads.
Chromed rear bumper off an '81' F150
A receiver hitch.
Set of air horns with compressor and air tank. Man that thing is LOUD!
Almost new Flowmaster 40 series mufflers for 30 bucks. Sounds good.
Now, if I could just find a set of headers........
I won't buy anything that came from MY truck!:P Considering that I've replaced almost the whole truck now, that's getting harder to do.

But I can tell you that my junkyard computer & ignition are working fine after 4 years and 200,000 miles.:-)
Try Dynomax from an advance auto store. They're only about 25 to 50 bucks a set, and if you're in the low rider crowd you'll be happy to know they glow in the dark....
How much are you trying to get 'em for - free? Headers are cheap.
The only reason I will visit the wrencken yard is to find that good buy. I really like the places that don't know what they have, better yet can't tell the difference between ford engines or the ones that are sought out for. I love picken up those 460/429 DOVE-A engine blocks.

I go and get anything and everthing as long as it looks kool and can be made to fit, except for those important items that would be smarter to get from a store. I haven't payed for a thing for about a year now :-X12 so the $50 limit wouldn't apply to me, my idea is if that part looks better than what you have and you think it could fit, it's fair game.
