I bought a couple new uncut PATS keys off ebAY for my X. I only have one original so I have to go to the dealer. Does it matter if I have a hardware store cut the keys ahead of time or just let the dealer do both cut and program them?
I would call the dealer and ask on pricing, might be free with the programming, but I doubt it, they will already be upset you didn't buy the keys form them. Maybe your dealer will be cool about it though, I'd hate to waste time going two places and paying from something twice if not necessary.
I bought some for mine as and I need to get them cut/programmed. I called the sealer, but they wanted way too much $$ for me. I called around to a couple of local locksmiths and got better pricing - I still haven't had the time to get it done yet.
Sorry for getting off topic but could someone tell me how to determine if a key is a PATS key? I just purchased a 2004 Excursion and got two keys without any remote key fob. I have since purchased a key fob off of ebay and programmed it for the vehicle and it seems to work okay. Thanksin advance for your help, Tom

I may get corrected here but I believe that if you look at the bottom of the key "head" (bottom being the part where the key shank goes into the head). There will be a little piece that looks like it can be removed (just a small outline of an insert). That is where the PATS chip used to be installed in the key.
I haven't worked for Ford since '02 so this may have changed since then.

What year is it? I thought you could program them yourself if you have a good key. I will have to look it up in my manual.
In the online Ford manual it said you can program the new key as long as you have two working keys. Thanks for the identification of the chip location!
I went to the dealer today with my two uncut keys. They were busy so there was about a 30 minute wait till they could start. But then after another 2-1/2 hours they finally finished. The mechanics says they had difficulty with the programmer communicating with my truck (?). They also managed to run down the batteries. THe service writer comes in and asks if my CEL was on when I came in (no). He says it probably set when they ran down the batteries. Then when I am paying ($35 for the 30 minute book rate for this job) I see the notes that they also replaced the CPS. Apparently the PO never took it in for the recall. I didn't get the one he changed out so hopefully this batch are good ones. Anyway I lost most of the afternoon getting keys programmed. Moral to the story, never get down to one key so as to avoid the dealership.

$35 and 2-1/2 hours is cheap for the dealer to program keys for you. The procedure requires 15 min wait time before you can even enter key programing. Count your blessings that you have a good dealer!!!! It could have been much more!!!! Moral of my story is DON'T LOOSE your TWO original keys and you won't have to go to the dealer to have additional ones programed......
