Do i have a Dana 50, Dana 60 front end?

I have a 92 F-250 Heavy Duty 4x4 351W E4OD. When I swapped out the auto hubs for Warn Premiums it called for a 30 spline hub, which is the same as used on 1ton trucks.

Is this enough info to tell me whether i have a Dana 50? Dana 60?

Are Dana 50s good?

are 60s good?

Whats the best?

You dont have a D60, that was only in the 1 ton. You either have the HD D44 or the D50.

I'm not positive but I think all F250 hd's (4th vin digit H ) had a ttb D50 in them from the factory, at least thats what I've been told and have read. I have a F250 hd and it came with the D50. If it has a solid front axle, 8 lug wheels then it's a D60, maybe a special order from the factory or a swap from a p/o. The hubs and brakes are the same on a D50 and D60.... The dana 60 imho is the best front axle you could have in your truck and is very coveted in the 4X4 crowd. The D50 ttb is also a real good axle as it can carry the same weight as a 60 but suffers from the troubles of the ttb set up... hope that helps

Don't forget the other dana 50's downfall....the Dana 44 centersection is a little weak for larger tires/ higher horsepower.

Dana 50 is a hybrid of the dana 44 and dana 60, the compenents in the center are d44 and the stuff out by the wheel is d60 stuff.

I have confirmed that I have a Dana 50 front end. Here is how it works for any who are curious:

Dana 44 uses a 19 spline hub (F-250 on down)
Dana 50 uses a 30 spline hub (F-250HD Heavy 3/4 Ton)
Dana 60 uses a 35 spline hub (F-350 1 Ton)

This is accurate for our 92-96 trucks. There will be some variations due to special orders or swap outs.

Thank you all for your help-

I thought the D60 came in a 30 or 35 spline version. have a look at this tech artical... seems like the 35 spline is a upgrade... looks like all D60 inner splines are 35 and the outer hub splines are either 30 or 35.

if it is a F250, it is either a dana 44 ifs, or a dana 50 ifs.
no F250's were made with the dana 60.

if it has a dana 60 in it, it was swapped by a previous owner.

the ring gear for a D44 is 8.5''... the ring gear for the D50 is 9''. When I looked up parts for my D50 a couple of years ago I noticed that it didn't share any parts with the 44, maybe the carrier is the same?

Dana 44 has 6 cap screws on the locking hubs.

Dana 50 has 3 cap screws on the hubs.

It has been true in the ones I've seen.

The first photo is a OEM hub the second picture is a aftermarket hub. The manual hubs from ford had the 6-bolt config while the auto hubs that I have seen have had different bolt configurations. Honestly, The F-250 HD came from the factroy with the Dana-50 as I remember from all the off road rags of the day talking about. The D44HD was primarily a 78 to 79 F250 solid axle with the D60 being the upgrade until 79 when the 4x4 F350 (first ford factory built 1 ton 4x4) from the factory had the D60 front and back. Most all the F350s I have seen had solid axles when 4x4 and F250s have been TTBs from 1980 onward to 1997. To tell whether it is the 44 or 50 depends on if it was swapped out or not, but the door pillar will tell you what the truck came with from the factory. I havent ever heard of a d60 as a ttb, but I thought the d50 had a different size ring gear than the d44 or d60.

Are you sure on the 6 vs 3 bolt thing? My 93' has 6 bolts on the lockout and D50 cast on to bottom of the the pumpkin (center section). I'd post pics but its sitting in 6 inches of slush with a blown clutch and I'm not in the mood to get wet.
