400 idle speed

Exactly how fast should a newly built 400 idle, in P,N, and in D with foot on brake?

Also how many rpm is redline? My rotating assembly is balanced and i used ARP rod bolts but i dont want to really even get close to hurting it. Where is my peak hp and tq? .........040 over with TMI pistons, XE262H cam, hedmann long tube headers, edel 1411 750cfm. The guy that built it estimated 350hp 400tq so thats what ive been telling everyone just not sure at what rpm etc etc

i'd be surprised if there was an exact idle as the specs of your build are outside any sort of standard. Looks like a solid build...i have a similar except went with roller cam...same basic cam specs except .519 lift. ...aussie heads. Working my idle out...would be better suited to determine vacuum spec imo....

I have a bit more agresiver specs on mine, i have 10:1 and xe269h cam, and it will iddle with no prob on 600rpm, your red line if you drive agressivly set it on 5500 if not set it on 5000...

mine is idling around 750 in park and 600 or 650 in D with foot on brake. I'm thinking i will leave it at that it seems about right i was just wondering how fast others idled.

If theres a chance of hurting it at 5500 then mine will rarely see 5000. I still havent done the first oil change but i will soon and then i will run it a little harder. My tach has a movable red tab i will set it at 5k and consider that redline that way i know i wont hurt it. It will make peak power before 5k anyways i'm assuming.

Yea I'm not sure what mine is timed at but i have been running the highest i can get at the pump usually 91 i think.

Ive been shifting the c6 manually sometimes since my kickdown isnt hooked up, and i do know that from about 3000 to 4000 it pulls REAL hard but im not gonna spin it over 4k under load until my first oil change. It has seen 5k just for a second in the driveway, sounds awesome!!!!!

650 RPM's with your foot on the brake is right there. The original sticker on the valve cover called for 650 rpm's in park/neutral. Yours is a new motor, it should will need a little bit more for a while. Get your kick down hooked up and you won't have to worry about over reving the motor. Take care of it until it's broke in and you'll get great service from it.

Roger, long time no see you around here, I wishhh, the 10:1 was an accident, i milled my heads by 0.025" when i had it as a 351m, and used TIMs 0 decked, but they are open chambered so that was why i was so amazed by the 89 octane. I was going to use an existing cam but had the high compression problem and wanted to keep the torque so i invented a cam with a lobe master catalog, its something between the extreme energy 262h and 274h with a duration of 269int and 280ext, and gives me enogh dcr to run 91, all though i loved the results, it revs pretty easily and has amazing torque even with my 2.75 9" rear..
