injector problem...HELP
My 95 with 160,000 miles smokes real bad and has no power. I had it towed to a shop and the mechanic narrowed it to an injector problem but he doesn't know which one or how many. He says they ohm out as good but has no way to check they when its running. And recommends changing them all. They cost $350 each plus about $600 labor to replace them.
He says the read out shows a code for a bad back pressure relay but believes this is caused by an injector problem.
My questions are...
1. How can he locate the failing injector?
2. Should all injectors be relaced or will I have prblems later on with another one?
3. Can injectors be rebuilt?

Now if he has a code for a bp relay start there, much cheaper, if it doesnt fix it your out 20.00.
1. Now if it is a bad injector one way to find it is having a CYLINDER CONTRIBUTION TEST done. Ford techs can do this, or someone with fords scanning software like the Auto Ingenuity program. It fires each injector one by one while the truck is off and you can hear which one is bad. I doubt your mechanic has this program.
2. If you do narrow it down to an injector and only want to do the bad one that should be fine.
3. I have not come across any companies that rebuild these injectors, called a lot but all say buy used. You might try Pensacola Diesel.

Depends why you say it's "smokes real bad." If it's losts of white smoke and sounds like it has a faint knock, that's most likely a split/broken nozzle. You could use a laser therm gun and find which cylinder runs the hottest. Or just start pulling them out and inspect the nozzles. At close to 200k miles, they are about due for an overhaul anyway.
FYI, My prices start at $500 for a complete overhauled set, flow tested, with a warranty, and they come back to you ready to drop in. Same price for either Stock or Stage-1.

Rosewood is a great place to get the injectors and yes they can be rebuilt. If you take all your injectors out and have them rebuilt by Jim, you will be cheaper than buying 2 or 3 of those stockers. Jim will also give you stage I's for the price too. I got stage II's from them and would not do business with anybody else. PERIOD!!
One way to isolate the injector, possibly. Is to remove the valve cover and crank it. If one does not spit oil it has a problem. A cylinder contribution test and a buzz test is what the mechanic should have done.
Do not buy those from the mechanic. You will be sorry and you will be broke for no reason.

You could buy your own AE, do the injector swap yourself, and still come out ahead.

Stock injectors provide 90cc of fuel as stage 1's provide 160cc. They claim 140hp gain.
There are some good links with pics on how to remove & re-install them yourself on this site, it can walk you thru it. Pull yours and swap em with Rosewood, you can get all 8 for less than the mechanic was gonna charge for labor alone.
