VAF question

Little off topic as this is for a 90 escort W/ a 1.9 EFI engine.

My VAF is shooting a bad trouble code as is may IAT. (Vane Airflow sensor, Inlet Air Tep sensor.)

I ripped the VAF and IAT assembly off and the car runs fine!

My question is..............is this a speed density system with a pointless sensor? Why will it run without an airflow sensor? I can deal with the idiot light blinking if it saves me $200.

I know its kinda off beat but anyone with knowledge on EEC-IV or a idea where to find out what is going on Id sure be greatfull!

Go here (www.fordfuelinjection.com)for all you need to know on EEC-IV and it's sensors. FWIW there are no unused sensors in this system they all play a role. The codes thrown may or may not tell you exactly what the problem is so sometimes you need to do a little extrapolation. The sensor you mention mesures intake air temperature, if it's out of range or disconnected the computer runs in open loop mode which is fine but milage will suffer so it's a good idea to replace the sensor.

Yeah, and the VAF is an early version of the modern MAF sensor used for correct air/fuel ratio.
