What is this thing?

Hello, Ive been working on my 95 f150 recently and noticed this box mounted on the frame near the passenger front side of the engine compartment. It has a vacuum line coming from the intake and another line that runs towards the back of the truck along the frame. i didnt see anything like it in the Hays manual. What is it and what is its purpose? Thanks

That is a fuel evaporative emissions canister. Or charcoal canister if you prefer. It's purpose is to capture fuel vapors and 'clean' them.

Thank you...sounds like another pointless emissions contraption. Will the truck go crazy without it? I am in the middle of an engine swap and I will probably remove it if I dont need it.
Thanks.

You'll want to keep it on there. It allows an air balance from somewhere that, if removed, would leave a fuel smell under the hood. Doesn't hurt anything or hinder performance in any way.

Be wise and dont remove it for in the next two years just abt every vehicle will have to pass an imession inspection and take it from me it can get very expensive to make one pass without removing the things it will have to have now. They wanted me to spend 600.00 in georgia to get a permit to drive it for a year because it would not pass so I moved out of the state where they dont have the inspection and now they are beginning to take abt it here. But you know how it goes the ones who pass all these new emission laws dont have to worry abt it cus they can afford a new car every year. If they cant afford one they will just give themselves a big raise so they can. So the moral of this story if it comes from the factroy then leave it on there

It's basically just a holding tank for the fuel that evaporates out of the gas tank(s). When the engine is running, the vapors from the tank are purged from the tank and burned in the engine. If the carbon can is not present, the evaporated fuel goes straight to the atmosphere.

I was reading my paper this morning and "Click and Clack" happened to talk about this very part. I thought I'd post the link to it for the heck of it.

Thank you for all the info! Interesting little article. I guess I forgot to mention the new engine I am installing is a diesel. The new engine is almost in and I decided to leave the box mounted on the frame with the line running back to the tank. Its not in the way and I just plugged the vacuum line that ran to the engine. I dont think it will be a problem, especially since diesel doesn't give off the fumes that gas does.
