small block exhaust questions

Hi all. I have a 72 F100 2wd with a mild 289. The crossover pipe is rusted out and I want to put duals on it. The truck isn't driven very often so I've decided against headers. I plan on using manifolds from a later 302 as they appear to be more free flowing than the originals and the left manifold I have has already been welded once. I also plan to install the equalizer pipe between the duals and run them straight out the back. There is a shop about 20 miles from me that does excellent work and will bend them from stainless pipe. Future plans include a mild 302 EFI swap. My question is what pipe size would be best? I don't drive very hard nor do I pull a trailer.

Thanks in advance.

2.25" to 2.5" at the most. What kind of an equilizer pipe do you plan on installing? X or H pipe?

I'm not sure yet. I'm still researching which would be best for the truck and the way I drive.

X pipes are more popular but more expensive than H pipes. They flow better than H pipes and give more mid tone raspier sound if you will. Not like glasspacks raspy but not as a deep tone as you would get from an H pipe. Follow me?

H pipes are cheaper, easier to install, produce good low end grunt and sound deeper than X pipes. The downside is they don't flow as well as X pipes. When your running true duals, your exhaust is already flowing enough as it is, assuming a stock or mild engine. H pipes are more old school. Me personally, I would go this route simply because of the deeper sound H pipes produce. Cost is always a factor too.

Thanks for the info. I will likely go the H pipe route. I'm trying to stay old school with this truck and I don't drive very hard. The truck is registered as an antique so I can't deviate too far from a stock appearance. Also I like the deeper sound of the older systems. As far as cost goes I'd rather spend the cash once on a good system than have to have a new one built in a few years.
