tankless water heaters

Hey guys/gals just wanted to know if anybody had any luck with a tankless water heater. My water heater bit the big one and my house is all electric so I'll be going with an electric one. Just wanted some opinions and/or horror stories before I drop too much money.

Check your Hydro panel and service before you buy, some smaller electric units can eat up 25-30 KW

2nd that, you need a lot of amperage to get 60* rise and any meaningful flow...

I have gas but no personal experience with electric.

We have no gas hookup where we live and did a lot of research into electric tankless. We ended up going with a tank. The electrics have a hard time keeping up with high flow, and can use a lot of power trying to get it to temp fast enough (and still not keep up with the flow rate).

The only place I'd use a tankless electric is for a workshop where space is a premium and use isn't high.

They draw a lot of power. They're also more expensive than a regular boiler.

But they save energy in the long run. If you're conscious about your energy consumption and plan on staying in your home than it can be a good investment.

Do not get a electric water heater. You probably wont be able to use it unless you upgrade your service and panel. You can get one that runs on propane and get an above ground tank. Thats what my dad did. And since May 2008 he has only gone thru about 20 gal of fuel with his. I am waiting to see what he is saving in fuel oil since he does not do domestic hot water thru the boiler anymore, only heat.

From what I've heard, the electric whole house units can't keep up. Most recommend point of use units if you're doing electric. The biggest electric unit I saw was in the 5GPM range but I don't know what kind of temp raise that was.

But that depends on where you live and how much you need to raise the water temp. Obviously it's easier to heat water in Florida than Alaska.

The tankless water heaters will cost you a lot of $$$$$ for the electric model. They work well, but all the KWH it takes to initially heat the water up will be very high. If you have access to natural gas or propane, that will be the way to go tankless.
