Lately, I noticed that the heater in my '06 F-150 XLT SuperCab with 5.4L V8 will intermittenly start blowing cold air even though I have the temperature dial set to 3/4 of full heat. My truck is equipped with manual environmental controls. Sometimes when I move the air vent selector switch back and forth, it will start blowing warm air again and other times doing this does nothing. The fan speed selector switch is working as it should. I thought at first the thermostat might be malfunctioning so I tested it and it seems to be working just fine. I tested it by putting it in a pan of hot water to see if the valve opened and it did. The only other things I can think of is there is either a faulty relay somewhere or there is a faulty sensor. Unfortunately, I need a wiring schematic for this circuit to chase down the problem. Anyone know where I can find wiring diagrams that show the relays and sensors for this truck? Thanks in advance.
Well, now I'm thinking the problem is a plugged up heater core. I drove the truck 200 miles yesterday and its still acting up. I chased down some of the electrical and could not see any faults. Now I'm off to get a new heater core. Just thought I would give you guys a heads up.
Unless the cooling system has been neglected the heat core doesn't usually get clogged. You might want to try back flushing the heater core first. Its a whole lot easier than tearing everything apart to replace the core.
I have the feeling the previous owner must have neglected the truck. She even put a slight dent in the rear bumper that I didn't notice until after I bought the truck. I will try backflushing the heater core first and see if that works. If not, the core will need to be replaced, which will be a real PITA to do. I replaced enough of these heater cores in Chevys, but if the back flushing doen't work, this will be the first one I've done in a Ford. Thanks.
