Power Steering Line

Hello,

I'm still working on the disc brake and power steering upgrade on my 2WD 66 F250. My donor truck is a 74 2WD F250. The 74 had a steel power steering line with a rubber hose on the end that attached to the pump. The other end of the steel line has a fitting that threads into the top of the gearbox. The steel line snakes back and forth and has a bracket attached in the middle of the snaking section that mounted to the frame rail on the 74. There is no hole on the 66 frame rail for the mounting bracket. I'm having some difficulty findng enough room to accomodate all the steel line especially the section that snakes back and forth. I can cut out the part that snakes back and forth and make the connection between the pump and gearbox with the remaing line and hose. However, I'm guessing that the line was designed with the snaking back and forth section for a reason. Does the system need the the snaking section of the line or can I just cut it out?

That snaking part is the return line, and was Ford's cheap substitute for a cooler.
Don't cut it, unless you put a cooler in the line some how. Your PS system will have no cooling otherwise.
I used a PS cooler from a mid '90s truck, and bolted it to the inside of the frame.
Works great!

Banjopicker66,

Thank you for the guidance. I considered the idea that the snaking of the return line might have to do with cooling the fluid. As usual I'm glad I posted my question here. I'll either figure some way to locate / position the return line or use a cooler.

I agree with John, Put a little after market cooler and don't worry about the long line.

Jowilker,

I'll look around for an aftermarket cooler. Thanks for the advise.

You should be able to find one at your local favorite parts house.
