Header paint

Ive noticed on the cheaper headers that they come painted black. Now my guess is that it is only there to prevent rust while its in the box because all the people ive heard of that install these get smoked out as the paint burns off. Is there a paint that will actually stick to headers or do they really just need to get ceramic coated?

And even chrome plated headers change colors, dont they?

Your best bet is to have then ceramic coated!

I had my stainless long-tubes done for $200.

My expensive Thorley headers came with ceramic coating on them and it wasn't long before they started rusting. I never had a set of ceramic coated headers that didn't start to rust within 6 months or less. Chrome plated headers are worse than ceramic, they will rust and turn colors in short order.

I would buy the black headers, strip off all the paint, smooth down the welds and give them a coat of VHT header paint. VHT paint is the best paint I've come across and lasts pretty long. You can get VHT at many major autoparts stores now since they were bought by Duplicolor. When the headers rust at spots wire brush the area and touch them up with the VHT paint, works well.
