I know a few guys who had lunch box lockers in the rear of their rigs. They didn't last. They seemed to be ok in the front for moderate wheeling and tire size. I wouldn't put one in the back, the rear is always turning so I've always used a full case locker like a Detroit, you can't beat them. If you have a common diff a good Detroit isn't to hard to find used.

Im glad i found this post. Hi Ed!

My Expedition has AWD/4Hi/4Lo. Ive been looking at the Aussie Locker for the front diff in our Expedition. The thing is, we drive on the street every single day and way more than we go offroad. When we do offroad, its light to moderate because we dont feel comfortable doing anything nuts with our daily driver. Thats what my Pathfinder is for.

Does anyone have any opinions or heard of any opinions about the Aussie on daily driver that goes offroad every now and then? How would the Aussie perform in the front of our Expedition? Anyone happen to know what diff is in the front of the 4x4 Expedition with AWD transfer case?

Hey Dave:

I almost passed this post up.
Anyway, I am not so sure if I would recommend a locker in the front of your SUV. That front end is rather fragile, and you ride is pretty heavy. The lack of locking hubs will make any sort of steering pretty darn difficult. Seem under load the front end tries to extend the suspension, and the tie rods tend to arch. This moves the front of the tires in. This is a sever "toe" change and the only reief it has is when the diff allows the tire with the least qmount of traction to spin. IF you have equal torque being applied to both wheels regardless of traction, then some drivetrain component will be compromised. This is usually a tie rod, or some other steering comonent. Needless to say the small front axles and CV joints will not be too happy with a locker up front.
Your rig does pretty well, and is fairly capable the way it is, if you were searching for more traction, then you may opt for some sort of traction device in the rear, and rear only.
