Thanks guys, I put the new thermostat in and I still have luke warm heat. I need to do what shelby1 said. Another couple questions, how do I get my temp gauge to work? I just changed my belt and it still squeeks. It is really annoying me now! Thanks guys!
I worked on a friend of mines Bronco this past week because he had very little heat. So because he drives alot on the dirt roads and trails in the woods north of here ,my first thought was the a/c condenser was plugged up like mine ,so I pulled the blower motor to look at the condenser well it was clear,a little dirt and leaves but nothing to restrict the air to the point that he was not getting heat. What I finely found was the thermostat was hung open ,so the motor was never getting warm to the point that it would produce heat.I replaced the thermostat and every thing is working like it should now .
What surprised me about this is I worked as a mechanic for many years both at a dealership and at independent shops and I never heard of or saw a thermostat hang open, plenty hang or freeze closed but never open. So I guess you are never too old to learn something new.............I thought that I had seen every thing when it came to autos but this showed me I was wrong !
Wouldn't the temp guage show the truck running cooler than normal?
Well I thought that too and I asked David ,the truck owner about it and he said that the gauge was running about where it all always had. After I got it working all right(got heat) I told him next thing to do was to get a direct reading heat gauge so he could tell what the thing was doing. I also told him that it was a good thing that it hung open ,since the gauge did not work right if it went the other way he would most likely have fried the motor.
Whenever mine makes that "water running" sound it means I am low on coolant. My truck seems to get a lot of little leaks around the hose connections from time to time.
That said, I have had 3 trucks of this vintage (own 2 currently) and all of them have pretty meager heaters. It's not a big issue for me because I live in Texas.

With the OEM gauge who knows. The sending unit is nothing more than a resistor mounted in a cylinder head that changes value as the temperature rises. Even the best electrical components lose resistance value over time and with the constant temperature fluctuation, this effect is only compounded. A good mechanical gauge is your best bet for accuracy. The same is true for the oil pressure gauge. The pressure switch (sending unit) will give you a typical oil pressure reading with pressures as low as 5-10 psi!
Thanks Greystreak92 for that answer. I knew OEM guages weren't very accurate, but that is kinda scary about the oil pressure. Haven't had time to work on the Bronco to figure out why it doesn't throw good heat, but I will let you all know what i find and if I have any other questions.
