Need Tranny help.

Before I start,I have a 1980 Ford F100 with a 4.9 and C6 automatic.I went out and started it today to watch the idle.I noticed a bunch of drops flying all over the engine compartment.I looked for the source and saw tranny fluid pouring out of the line.It was hitting the fan and throwing it everywhere.I shut the truck off,and dried off the lines and felt around them.It seems the top tranny line rusted through about 3 inches from the fitting where the tranny line connects to the radiator. So I need to get new Lines. My question is,does anybody know how long the lines are?My dad had to replace them on his truck and it's almost impossible to guess the length.I know that the lines don't have to be bent exactly to the factory shape, but I don't want to end up short. So I was hoping someone knows this offhand. All help is appreciated.

Happy Holidays!

A quick fix would be to use a neoprene fuel hose and a couple of clamps. My 86 had that done to it before I got it and that was 1992. Still holding up. You could use copper with compression or flare fittings to splice the line. Or just buy a roll of copper and go at it.

I might try that.A buddy reccomended doing somethin like that because I don't want to put on new lines until I have the tranny rebuilt.

A word of warning: Do not use rubber line and clamps.

If it does fail, it will shower your engine with highly flamable tranny fluid! Trust me on this one. My friends nearly new truck burned to the ground on the side of the road when his cooler sprung a leak while towing his race car.

Replace them with new steel lines.

It's a bit late for that. The previous owner took off the fan shroud,so the tranny fluid is hitting the fan and throwing it everywhere. My exhaust manifold never gets hot enough to burn the tranny fluid though. My dad burned the vaccum lines on his truck because of leaking tranny fluid.

I've decided to go with steel. My fuel line flew off the carb today because the clamp broke,so I don't want that to happen to the tranny line and throw all the tranny fluid everywhere more than it already does.I went out and measured and i'm gonna have to get about 13 feet of it.So it looks like my Christmas money is spent.lol.

A few dollars for some pieces of universal steel line at the parts store shouldn't use all your Christmas money? I wouldn't think it would cost over $15.00. You probably could get it done with 4 pieces and 2 couplers. Or just use a compression fitting and a short piece of steel line to repair the line you have.
