Evap system removal?

I have a 79 CA. truck that still have the cat. converter. I already removed the air pump and plugged the holes in the heads but can I remove the evap canister that's mounted on the right side of the fender well. Kinda yellowish in color with a blue cap. I'm changing the carb to a 4bbl over the holidays and won't have the accessibilty for the emission hose on the new carb... Where I live we don't have to have inspections. Shortly after the converter will be coming off for headers and dual exhaust.

Can I just plug those hoses that lead into the canister?

It's to keep fumes from the tank and fuel bowl from evaporating into the atmosphere. Instead they go to the cannister. It's to help the environment. However, mine is long gone. I literally just have the evap line from the tank running about halfway along the frame, and then nothing. I would be interested in knowing if it causes any problems with fuel evaporating more quickly as the truck sits. However, my evap system has gone for about a year now, and I myself haven't had any problems. I'm not saying you should or shouldn't do it, I'm just saying I don't have mine anymore and it seems fine. So, what you do is up to you. The rule of thumb, though, is if you don't have to remove something, don't do it...Ford didn't install something if they didn't have to. If Ford could sell a vehicle for the same price but save money by not installing an evap system, then they wouldn't have installed it. The reason I don't have mine anymore is because I changed out my front clip at one point and the new clip didn't have it, and I didn't transfer the old one over. I was in a time crunch more or less.

I do not believe that carb has a hookup for a bowl vent; it vents openly. If you want to keep the cannister you'd have to plug the line that came from the old carb.

Don't plug the carbon canister line from the fuel tank. It works as your vent for your fuel tank. Had a 38 gal. gas tank suck in from a vent being plugged. Had to buy another tank. Your carbon canister is doing nothing without the oringinal air cleaner. What I did was run a fuel line to it and run it to a place where it can vent. Like inside a rear box or front fender. Up to you.

1979 F100/350 & Bronco 351M/400 charcoal cannister to carb hookup.

The vapor cannister has a cap on one side, a nippled valve (D8FZ9B963B - Motorcraft CX203A) on the other side.

A neoprene hose runs from a nipple on the top of the carb's air horn to this valve.

Not sure if this was directed at my post or not - to clarify, I said plug the opening on the cannister that used to run to the carburetor. This is separate from the line running from the tank.

I took mine off when I cleaned up the emissions and kind of regret it. I park it in my attached garage at night and by morning you can smell gasoline pretty strong. I need to figure out how to hook it back up.

Thanks for telling me this guys, I will leave it alone. I will just plug the nipple that runs from the carb to the canister.

I don't believe plugging this would be a good idea, since this is the outlet end of the fuel tank venting system and would have the same effect as plugging at the inlet side of the canister. I would try and route a line into the under side of your air filter housing, so you could get the benifit of burning the vapors when your truck is running. If you're running an after market air cleaner you may have to rig up a hose connection to it to do this.
