i broke one of the little ears off the bottom of my stock air box in my 01 excurison. looking to do something to replace it. looking for what people are recommending for a replacement. should i buy an aftermarket one or just do the wix 6637 filter thing. if i do the wix thing do i need to do anything else besides installing it on the small piece of pipe? not looking to send a lot of money. also tell me best place to buy. i also have a superchips tuner on this truck. it is the first one they came out with i think. only 60hp in performance mode. how dangerous is it to not monitor the exhaust temp for normal driving? would like to have a gauge but don't want to put one in right now. thanks
Welcome to FTE. Do the 6637 and you will be fine. Don't worry about EGT with the superchip. That chip doesn't have enough power to hurt anything. I ran one for 4 years without gauges. You see what I have in my sig now. Take the old air box off and keep asking on here before you do anything. These guys/gals can help steer you right.
Another vote for the 6637. If you really want another stock box I'd send you mine for the cost of shipping but I highly recommend going with something better than stock.
Here is a pic of mine, take the box out only and you can see the white 3" DWV coupling I have between the filter and the intake hose. You also can see one of Pete's cover on the filter.
thanks that is great. did you run the 99 intake for a certain reason? and is that the two dual alt top hose? i like how it doesn't run through the belt.
I have a question, Once the air box is out how does one re mount the battery? Will it go back in ok or will we need to purchase a battery mount. Can i pick that up from Napa also when i get the filter?
You just remove the stock air box, you dont have to remove the battery mount.
When you go to napa for the filter ask them to make you a deal. My first quote for the filter was $65. I said come on cut me a deal! Well then it was $50 so I asked the if they matched prices they asked me how much I could get it for I told them $29 online they gave it to me for $32.
Worth a try, I dont want to take anything away from Fleet Filter but living in Texas if I order from Fleet Filter I have to add tax to my order so It' actually easier to go to napa and get a "deal".

Look at my pic, you will see the battery case still in place. I never took it off to do the install.

I had to buy a 99.5+ intake hose to run an AIS on my early 99. Reused it for the 6637. That is the radiator hose that came on early 99 and I don't have dual alts.
This may be a stupid question, but how often do you need to replace that filter on average? And what about the cover? Will this help to lower EGT's?
And lastly, 4" ID pipe or OD? (also feels like a stupid question)
Sorry to hijack thread...
4" OD is what you need. 4" ID would be a tight fit depending on the wall thickness on what you are using.
Filter interval change really depends on the conditions where you drive, but 10 to 15k would not be unreasonable, even longer under the right conditions. The cover not only looks good but acts as a prefilter and it is washable.
The more air you can get in, cool, and pass through will help lower EGTs. Larger filter, larger intercooler, big exhaust turbine and outlet, and big non-restrivtive exhauist (read muffler delete) all combine to lower EGTs.
Like we always say here, "The only stupid question is the one not asked".
