Thinking about making my own fuel. Was wondering what if it would affect the performance of any mods that i have or plan to get, or would i still get the hp gains and mileage increases of regular diesel? What do you guys think?
I can't say how it would alter the performance given the mods to your truck, but I can say what performance changes I saw when running my 95 F250 4x4 on my home brewed fuel.
0-60 acceleration: 5% performance drop (5% more time to reach 60 MPH)
Mileage: 5% mileage loss (19-20 on biodiesel vs 20-21 on petrodiesel)
Noise level: Noticeably quieter on biodiesel - though I have no measured data.
Come warmer weather I'll repeat the tests with my 97 F250 (the 95 head-butted a tree and lost).
Sorry about your loss . How did you make yours? What I plan on using is what a guy from my work uses and he actually saw an increase in mileage. Thanks for your input.
FWIW, I do about 1 set of injectors a month that are trashed from BIO/WVO/WMO.
I personally run WVO in my truck in the summer only, and only about a 30% mix, and only in one tank. I run 1 tank mixed, then the other straight #2. I have have not had any adverse injector wear burning it like this.
I ran a higher mix in the summer several years ago, like 75% or so and after a couple months the injectors showed noticeable signs of WVO use. Not sure if it was good or bad at that point, but from what I have seen I wasn't going to take a chance and dropped my % way back.
Just so ya know.
As long as you make good fuel you'll be fine. I've ran 10k+ on B100 (changed fuel filter when i started just for fun and haven't had anything go wrong) and just lost a small bit of performance, maybe 5% all around. But it does run quieter because of the increased cetane. While #2 must exceed 40 but is usually around 42-44, biodiesel can be from 46 all the way to 70 depending on the feedstock. The less saturated the oil the better the cetane value and lower the gelling point ( canola is one of the best ). It also won't smoke as much, so that can be good or bad depending on what you want. I would suggest making your own fuel. It does require some time, but I enjoy it and also enjoy all the money i save, even if diesel is only 2.50 a gallon around here. I've heard of a biodiesel duracrap that ran a 10 sec quarter mile, so making power on bio isn't an issue. If you decide to start making it and need any help or advice I'd be more than happy to help you out. I've got a couple years of experience and have had alot of help from a professor at the University of Illinois. Just don't buy a kit, they are usually way overpriced.
Other than a decided lack of performance once things start to get cold (-0*) I've been getting pretty much the same results as the above posts. I guess I've put on around 18-20k on 100% bio so far.
Thanks to everyone for the help so far. I've read up on this DSE(Diesel Secret Energy) site and like I said I work with a guy that uses it. He's had no problems with it so far and he saw increased mileage by 1-2 mpg, runs quieter, and smells better. As for performance like 0-60 or quarter mile his truck is an old ambulance converted work truck; he doesn't try to go very fast with it. I'll let everyone know how it goes when I start. Feel free to leave some more tips or thoughts. Thanks!
DSE is a mix of WVO, gas, kerosine, cetane boost, and an additive they send you. It involves no conversions, separate tanks ect. You pump the WVO from one drum through two different filters to another drum, add what's mentioned above, mix and pump into your tank whether there is still diesel in your truck or not. Ends up being around 40 cents a gallon to produce.

So basically it's blending, but those at DSE sell you some 'additive'.

If you really want to do blending, just run a mix of filtered, dry WVO and RUG. Typical ratios are 80 to 85% WVO, the rest RUG. But be careful.
My advice: make your own biodiesel. DSE is not biodiesel.
