Hey guys I put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on my 84 F150 a while back and today I was driving down the road and just happened to look down and noticed I only had like 5 pounds of oil pressure. I happened to be near a friends house so I stopped there. I thought my engine was about gone. Well i removed the line from the gauge and started it and it just kinda would drip oil and not squirt out like it should of. So depression set in and all I wanted to do was drink beer but before I done that I pulled the line off the the fitting on the engine. Started it up and oil shot up and hit the hood and went everywhere. So I'm thinking the line must me the problem. It was -3 degrees so the oil was probably thick. Something I noticed was that my line looks alot smaller than the plastic line that comes with most gauges. Mine is a copper line. So even though the oil wouldn't come out of the line but would shoot everywhere with the line off the engine is that telling me that I do have oil pressure? Engine is super quiet and I drove it 30 miles cutting wood today.
Make sure the line isn't kinked or crushed anywhere. Might have just gummed up if its been in the car for a while. Is there any way of screwing the gauge directly into the fitting on the engine to see if it still works?
I presently have 3 oil pressure gauges on my recently-rebuilt 400; the factory gauge (which I
don't trust in the least), a mechanical one with a plastic line, and a brand-new AutoMeter
electric one. When it was recently -18F outside I noticed the mechanical one wasn't much
good; it was VERY slow to show ANYTHING and I'd have been scared like you were if it
was my only gauge to go by. A kinked copper line is also something that would cause your
problems.
