transmission identification help

My transmission went the other day while driving and I had it towed to my local garage. Mechanic there confirmed the trans was toast but wants $2400 to replace. I'm not willing to pay that kind of money so I think I am going to tackle it myself. The problem is I can't figure out what trans I need. The truck is a 91 F150 2WD with a 302 motor 5 Speed manual. I climber under the truck to look at the trans but I can't see any markings on it whatsoever. I guess they are on the top of the trans. Also, the label on the drivers side jamb had been removed prior to my buying the truck. Is there a way to identify the trans from the VIN#?

It's nearly certain you have a Mazda M5OD, the heavier ZF 5-speed was typically used in HD trucks only. You're wise to avoid that mechanic, a manual tranny in a 2wd truck can be swapped inside 3-4 hours.
