Yesterday afternoon i got a call from Stroken, his piece left him stranded yet again. Just so happens i was driving that way, 3 minutes away, and took him to lunch, went back for the gooseneck, and put it on the gooseneck, yet again. (familiar sight!)
He pulled away from a stop sign with cross traffic @55mph, trying to get through traffic, and POP, something in the rear let loose, and then coasted downhill for hmmm 1/4 mile to a stop. Here is the carnage:
On the left side, the top carrier cap bolt was loose, and pulled the outermost three threads out of the axle, the bottom bolt broke in half. im guessing this was backing out over time, loose, and the torque load from a stop walked the ring gear up around the pinion, pushing the carrier out, and snapping the bolt, and pulling the three threads the bolt was still screwed into, out. The marring on the gear (and pinion too) was the several hundred revolutions it made before the idiot decided to stop
Lucky for him, i had my stock carrier and 3.73 set i cleaned up, installed and checked wear pattern, got him back on the road by 1:30 am, and im going on 20 minutes of sleep because i had to go and work this morning
enjoy the pics, everyone loves looking at carnage.
Can you post a picture of the bolt you said backed out? Prefer end shot I would like to know if there are any marks, pin holes? Looking for defective bolt or cap alinement possible cause.
Ha, thanks. I try to help a friend out whenever i can, especially this guy. More like hats off, reps, whatevers to HIM, he has spent countless hours helping me for free, working on my junk, coming over after work at 10ish am, spending the day in the shop helping out, working into the evening and such, even late. This was the least i could do
