When the switch is in 4x4 is there power to the front wheels. Like if you were to floor it on a slippery surface would the front tires spin

I'd try spraying some penetrating lubricant in them first. I use Penephite which is AeroKroil penetrating oil with graphite. I have to order it from Kano Labs in Nashville, TN.

You should be able to turn the selectors manually with little resistance. Turning them clockwise engages them and counter-clockwise puts them back into auto mode.

so they are supposed to turn?? definetly??? i did have trouble a couple of times with 4x4 this winter, i would hit the switch and it would be better but not great, so i would stop put in neutral switch to 2wd and then back to 4x4 and it would finally kick in. this is why i tried to manualy lock them and discovered they wont turn... do you have to put it in neutral to switch the transfer case??

David, many people have had problems with the manual hubs, myself included. You might get away with spraying some wd40 and working them back and forth. I locked mine for the winter and am going to replace them in the spring with warn premium hubs. The hubs also have a vacuum line going to them, meaning when you put the selector switch in 4x4, vacuum is applied to the hubs and automatically locks them, then when you put it back in 2x4 vacuum stops and puts the hubs back into free position. The wrighting on the hubs is also probably gone, indicating when in free or lock. You have optional manual locking hubs in case you have a vacuum leak or a falure you can still lock your hubs and have 4x4 available. I think I covered your questions in my rambling.
Good luck,

Brian

David,

I think I'd try to free them up. That way, if they don't want to engage by vacuum in auto mode, which mine have done a couple of times, you've got the option of manually overriding the electronic/vacuum system and locking the hubs. You're supposed to be able to "shift on the fly" from 2wd to 4wd high but you've got to stop, put your foot on the brake and put it in neutral to shift in and out of 4wd low.

There's another indication on autolocking hubs.Look for small about 1/16 inch ingraved round dot which indicate exact "lock" and "auto" position while turning your locking hub lever.(got pictures but don't really know how to post)LOL
Mine were frozen in "auto" position which is all the way to the left(counterclockwise) ,
("lock"position all the way clockwise)
Now,If you can see that dot and your lever is on the left side of that dot you're in "auto" position and vice versa if your lever is on the right side of the dot you're in
"lock" position. Soo if they're frozen in "auto" and your vacuum + ESOF works then you should have 4X4 and if they're frozen in lock and ESOF works you should have 4X4 also.
As for maintnance of your hub locks there's fantastic thread on this fantastic site.
If you want ???E-mail=pics

david wd40 will work well fro thsi. spary it good and get them moving. They are just crudded up a little. As for the switch it is most lilely vaccuum issue. mine went a long time ago and i just lock them when needed. some people drive with the locked and use the switch to activate them. good luck.

I have Lock and Free hubs on my X. Possible changed at one point but I put brand new Lock and Auto hubs on it, cleaned the vacuum lines and still can't get them to work so I gave up.
