my truck? 2002 F250 CC 4X4 7.3. 140K Miles. While pulling my skid steer (about 10,000 lbs.) up a steer dirt road, my wheels started spinning. I shifted into 4 Hi to get some traction. When the 4WD engaged, I had a terrible "clunk." I knew something wasn't right. The 4WD engaged and up the hill I went with no problem. When I got on flat ground, I checked under the front wheels and found oil/fluid pouring out of the little drain hole. I had to drop my trailer and get home, and it was after 5:00, and I was in the country with no help around. The truck ran fine to my home and never had any problems. I'm no mechanic, and would appreciate any troubleshooting help before I take it to my mechanic tomorrow. Anyone know what I might be in for? I've only had this truck for a short time and have used the 4WD briefly on a couple of occasions with no problem.
did you shift while spinning? First thing tomorrow I'd drop the front diff cover and take a look. Check the front prop shaft for loosness. Not sure what drain hole your refering to. The clunk could just be a bad u-joint. Too late to go out and look at mine. Others should chime in.
If you are moving, the clunk is normal as the front drivetrain is coming up to speed, but if your rear tires were spinning and you engaged 4x you could have cracked the transfer case, or damaged the hubs. I did this once as I thought the rear tires had stopped spinning and got a loud grinding noise. I guess I got lucky as everything still works...
The little drain I'm speaking of is right behind the oil pan, attached to the front diff. I called my mechanic, and he said the hole was there to drain, so that you would know there was a leak...well it worked.
Thanks for the replies...like I said, I'm no mechanic, and I'm learning as I go. This is the first diesel I've owned.
It could be a grenaded transfer case or damaged the front Diff if it was coming out of that little hole.
Thanks for the help...I'm afraid that's what it probably is. I was in too big of a hurry to get done for the day, and to get out of another vehicle's way, and I screwed up....what a lesson to learn when just starting a new business. Anyone need any dirt work or land clearing work done in the Central or South Texas???

Maybe Im not seeing this correctly in my head, but your saying "behind the oil pan" and "attached to the front diff" but those areas are not connected. If fluid was pouring out of the drain hole right behind the oil pan out of the TQ dust shield then you have the very common front seal tranny leak. My 01 will puke a quart of tranny fluid out of that drain hole every time I try to tow something heavier than my fat butt.
Yeah, that's got me a little baffled as well. Unless he meant transfer case instead of diff. I almost wonder if he is seeing fuel from the drain tube, but that's not attached to either one.
Just for future reference. The rear tires have to turn at the same rate as the fronts so if the fronts arent turning and the rears are the front end has to try to catch up really quick. Usually that means breaking something.
