83 6.9 Started sputtering then will run fine. Sputter then run fine. Plowing snow tonight it surged a couple times then staled. could not get it started again. Mess with it some more in the morning. I,m going to change the fuel filter hope that cures the problem.

How cold is it over there? Fuel gelling would be my first guess.
What is the fuel level in the tank?
Is it stalling when you let off the pedal at 1500 RPM?
It is 3f right now guess I didn't think about gelling. It has been in the teens to low 20,s last few days. The truck was idleing when it stalled. Fuel tank is full, that is the first thing I thought. Been there done that.
I wonder why there have been so many fuel probs? Most suppliers KNOW it gets cold in the winter. Seems like their dropping the ball with the winter fuel supply?

One of our diesels had fuel gelling and it was a lot warmer than 3F. shot the fuel filter with a heat gun for a few seconds and it was good to go.
put a propane blower heater under the truck rapped front of truck with plastic for two hours still no start. Took off line from lift pump to filter no fuel. Waiting for my wife to get back with new lift pump. Hopeing this cures my problem.
put lift pump on started up ran like a champ. Son took it to plow his driveway said it stalled on him a couple times. Maybe i will put some diesel kleen in it.

I live in Vancouver, Wa. and I run fuel conditioner/anti gel, and its only in the 20s to low 30s...
I also run trans fluid year round...
well back to square one truck died on son last night. I took it for a 10 mile drive, (after new filter and lift pump)Ran super good son took it to plow his driveway stalled couple times, then on the way back to my house it died and would not start. So going to put diesel kleen in it. If that doesn't help I am going to put new fuel line from tank to lift pump.
Yes there are specific directions for installing the straight arm lift pump, they must be followed to the letter or lift pump and/or engine damage may result.
If gelling is the issue, the fuel may not be getting to the lift pump.
Chuncks of wax can and will stop up the fuel lines, filters and strainers.
Possibly you had the shop warm enough to dissolve the wax, when you pulled it back outside the fuel gelled and stopped the lines up again.
I watch the Weather Channel a lot, if you are in that brutal cold air mass, I think gelling is your issue.
