Hello, I have seen this mentioned a few times in the towing forum and just wanted to ask a quick question.
With the manual hubs unlocked/free, place the truck in 4wheel low - is there any risk of damage? This really sounds like a great thing for backing up the fifth wheel, nice little slope to get into the driveway.
Thanks
No, I do it all the time. If I have to pull a very heavy load up a hill on the street with my little truck, I even use it then. Of course top speed is 35-40 MPH in 4 low
I currently have open diffs front and back and will use 4LOW 4x4 to get started and will push in the clutch once the truck gets going to relieve stress.
Why not just use 4 wheel drive? Going thru same motions, right?

4WD on dry pavement is not good with hubs locked in. All my vehicles which are older, will lockup and almost impossible to shift back to 2WD without jacking them up and freeing the hubs.
You can't do that on your truck- Super Dutys have two positions for the hubs- locked and auto. You'll be in 4x4, but for a short jog up a ramp that should be ok. If it binds up and is hard to get out of 4x4, take your foot off the brake and turn the steering wheel side to side while pulling on the t-case shifter. It should just pop out and into 2wd without too much trouble.
I'm showing my ignorance of new model options, I think...did Ford, in their infinite wisdom, decide to get rid of the manual hubs? I know for a fact that in '04 you could indeed get true manual hubs...they were marked "free" and "lock", just like the old-time Warns. I just don't know what Ford has done for hubs since then.
As far as I know they did. We have a '93 that originally had the auto hubs in it, aside from not being able to use 2wd low it also locked into 4wd about 5 seconds after you already got stuck.
