Hey I just heard that the new F150 can be optioned with an electric locker in the rear. I guess that's old news to y'all though. I was looking for info on what axle it is in. Is it a 9.75 like the old body style? Was there any mods made to the design of the axle? Specifically I'm trying to figure out if I can pick up one of these carriers from a Ford parts counter, take it home and drop it in a 97-03 9.75 axle.
The E-Locker only comes on the Fx4 model, it is an electronic locker not automatic locker. To engage the locker you pull out on the selector **** for 4X4, so it is a manual electronic locker. I read somewhere but do not remember where that you can lock it in 2wd but I am not positive on that. I do not know if it can be purchased from Ford at this point or if it will fit in older models.
Yeah I wish they would put it in the 4x2 as well but no luck with that yet. I just checked Ford's site and looks like it can only be engaged in 4low and 4high, not 2wd.
its still the same 9.75 axle as its been for years...so it should fit, you'd have to find out where they're routing the wires....best thing i can think of is go crawl under one on a dealer lot when they get one and see if they're coming out the cover (my bet) or the actually put a hole in the housing....
So far nobody aftermarket shows one for the 9.75. Plenty for the 8.8 and some for 9" and 10.25.
Like Ryan said, you might have to hit the local dealer and look under a FX4 to see how it is wired. I'm sure all you would need is a fused switch to send it 12V.
rc6869 is correct. The locker can only be activated in 4hi or 4lo. The switch will not pull out in 2hi. The axle appears to be limited slip when the locker is not activated.
Ford should put this locker in 4x2's as well. That is a big deal for me.
Agreed and if this works out well on the FX4, it would be nice to see it available on all trucks. It's a cash cow. It's too bad it's only available in the FX4. I liked the FX4 better when it was an optional equipment group vs it's own trim line. I want chrome up front, I don't like the blacked out grill and there's too damned much paint on the front of these F-150's and Expy's. I wash my vehicles weekly out of enjoyment and I notice more rock chips, dried bugs and scratches, etc. Chrome is easier to clean and less susceptible to the blemishes that comes with paint, IMHO.
Is someone really going to take a 40k FX4 out booney bashing? Possibly, once maybe.

My tastes are different than yours my friend! I love the painted grill look. I do agree with you though, it's easier keeping chrome clean.
I wouldn't take my $40K out to play. I wouldn't buy a $40K vehicle to begin with! Ha ha. I took my '94 mild mudding and decided I had enough of that the first time I had to wash it!
I tell you what though. It sure is nice knowing your truck is capable enough to tackle a little mud with ease. People can say what they want about 4x2's, but they aren't pavement pound 100%. I did learn real quick you can't rock climb in a 4x2 though.. ha ha.

I hear ya brother, sure is a nice looking rig you have there. My old '88 is well used but in great shape, needs paint though. I've done my fair share of mudding, beach cruisin' and snow driving and I'll say one thing, she very capably demonstrates what Ford country is all about even to this day. With a 194k on the odo, I still drive her like I stole her. I like my chrome bumpers and mirrors.

That should be easy enought to fix however....seems to me a second switched wire would let you activate it whenever you want.....

Thanks Tim!
If all your truck needs is paint, it's in pretty good shape at 194K! I just love how rugged older Ford trucks are.
