Last night a buddy and I took the Excursion up the back roads to Idyllwild(Local Mountain town) to go check out the snow. Truck did great then about 2/3's of the way up the hill we hit snow, truck was still doing fine. Then when we started hitting deap snow the truck developed a miss and kept shutting off like it ran out of gas(sputtering) and even threw a small pop out of the exhaust. It also threw on the check engine light and flashed the overdrive light. We'd let it sit for a while after trying to start it and having it die then after letting it sit it would start up fine and drive normal for a while then it would start the whole process over again. Then when we got to the top and drove on the streets again it was fine, drove down the hill without a problem. Taking it to Victorville today to have codes checked but was wondering if this sounded familiar to anyone. Truck Has a 2 week old fuel filter, 4 day old K&N, 2 weeks on a trans fluid and filter change, and the trans has never slipped or shifted funny. 2002 Excursion 4x4 V-10 82,746 miles

A shot in the dark...... the higher you go, the less oxygen there is of course. Combined with a K&N air filter that might be lubricated too much, and the engine might be starving for air at higher rpms while pulling uphill? It was probably getting enough air even at the higher altitude to idle and run at lower rpms maybe?
We looked into that option also. I pulled the air filter and started it up and it would still miss and die and that was in park. It was weird it would run like crap then after a couple of times of it starting and dying it would start and run fine for a while then start all over again a little ways down the road
My first instinct is water shorting the electrical/spark system. It would take a good bit of water to short out enough coils to kill the engine though.
When a sensor goes out of range, the computer should switch to open loop operation not die. It used to be call FMEM, but the idea is you can limp home should any sensors fail. To kill the engine, it would take an active element like IAC or EGR valves failing.
Well I got my answer, it was 2 Output Speed Sensor codes and an engine misfire code. I heard what I thought was a ticking noise under the car last night but I think maybe the sensor wiring was arching? That and I bought all new boots for the coils and new plugs so we'll see if that does the trick. Another thing we noticed today also was that when it would start running like crap the blinker in my mirror would flicker lightly. My friend at Sunland Ford thinks we just got snow in too many places it shouldn't be
Posting update for reference
Put in Bosch Iridium plugs and changed the CoP boots and springs and the problem is solved. The Electrical (mirror blinker flickering) and sensor glitches were cause by RF(?) signals being sent out due to the misfiring ( how it was explained to me). Have also heard of bad alternators causing this. Since changing these two things my output speed sensor has not glitched at all, no stalling or check engine light. Runs like a new truck. Old plugs were shot with number 5 being the worst. Will post pics. Hope this helps
Thanks for the info and hope it works out for you. I used the bosh iridiums for a while then went to an autolight plug. the milage was good at first but by 10,000 miles the milage sucked and the truck wouldnt idle well.
It happened to me not too long ago.. Don't know what u have, but mine is a
05 PSD.. brought it in to the dealer and it was the Fuel Injector Module..
replace it under warranty..
