Monday I got stuck. Wasn't a lot of nasty mud but it was in standing water. The wheels were about 3/4 in the water for several hours before I could get it out. I took it home and cleaned the underside real good and greased everything that had a fitting. The problem is that in about the first 20* of the turning radius in either direction the wheels feel like their binding, and there is a groaning sound coming from them when you turn. Going around a curve the steering will slightly stick and then free up and jerk back when I straighten up. I'm going to take the wheels off this weekend and try to see what's wrong. Is there anything in particular from these symptoms I should look for? Anything else I should do for maintenance?
something else you may want to check. If you axles were sumerged. would be your diff fluids. if the alxels where heated up from driving and you sumereged them in water than it can cause water to be sucked into the diff fluid. good luck
there should be a tag on the rear diff that will tell you that weight to use for instance it would say sny 75 140w. may try checking your local dealer to double check the weight of the fluid and how much it uses. What ever brand you use just use a top name brand.
I'm no mechanic. I assume by stub shafts you mean the 4x4 shafts.
Stub shaft = the front axle shaft outboard of the u-joint behind the steering knuckle. The stub goes into the hub, which is what locks that wheel into the axle. I suppose the water could have theoretically gotten past the vac seal on the knuckle or in through the hub.

As Texastech said, the stub shafts are the little shafts behind the hub assembly. Between the stub shaft and regular axle shaft is a U-joint. I've had this joint give up on me with previous truck after a submersion. This in turn caused some of the symptoms you are having.
n the event the unit bearing assembly is the cause you may want to replace those U-joints while you have the truck apart because they most likely will crap out soon enough. Especially if they're the "sealed" kind.
