I got a 95 bronco 302 5 speed, 140 thou. Ive owned it for about 6 months and havn't had any issues w/ it untill this morning I started it , it started just fine I drove probably 10 miles, went in a store for 15min came back out and it cranked just fine the starter engaged and it just about started i tried that about 3 times and every time it would just about start, we are currently in kind of winter freeze with temp in the low teens which is kind of unusual for the area I live so i thought maybe I had some bad gas w/ water or smthing and it froze so I left it till the after noon when every thing thawed out some what and nothing so after work i went back and changed the fuel filter, the fuel pump relay, pulled a plug wire and stuck a spark plug in it i have spark and checked the fuse box where I did not find any burnt out I did poke the shrader valve on the fuel rail and was able to get gas to come out of it but my understanding is that their should be like 30 plus pounds of pressure, and the way the gas came out it did not have that kind of pressure, so what I guess Im asking is their a way to check to see if the fuel pump just happen to give it up right then with no prior known symptons or do I need to start chasing other possibilites?
You did not mention computer codes. You can pull the codes with a nifty little code reader for about $30+ or if you have patience use some wire and count the check engin light flashes. Even if it is not running you can get KOEO and CM codes. See Ford Fuel Injection and way down on that page Ford Fuel Injection How To Run a Self-Test
You might try spraying some starting fluid in the throttle body. If it starts then you can narrow down the problem to the gas supply, i.e., spark, timing, and compression are ok.
Well I was able to pull some codes and they are 116 114 542 Im starting to lean towards the fuel pump but im still not 100% and I kind of want alittle reasurance before I drop 190 bucks at ford to get a new one
You might try to trade places with the fuel pump relay and the other identical relay beside it. Might be the relay or the connector the relay plugs into. They are in the power dist. box under hood.
For the ECT and ACT, I removed mine, and tested resistance in the oven at about ten degree intervals. See Ford Fuel Injection charts. Both were telling the computer the temp was cooler than actual thus engine ran rich.
It might not be the fuel pump, it might just be the filter on the fuel pump. That's alot cheaper than a new pump. I just changed the filter on a Throttle Body Injected '84 Chevy Caprice. The pump still worked but didn't have enough supply thru the plastic in tank filter. I also had the gas tank cleaned out at a radiator repair house (hot tank).
if your dropping the tank to replace the fuel filter sock you might as well replace the pump.
do a search many people have cut a whole in the back to access the pump.I still think you need to check the fuel pressure with a gauge. 39-45psi is what you should have
