oil pan clearance issues

I am tearing down a "highboy" with a transplanted 390. I tried to pull the oilpan off to check a rod and main bearing. The pan could not drop between the headers so I took out all the bolts in them. Then I find out that the front of the pan hits the front crossmember and it wont drop because the oilpump pickup is trapped under the baffle in the oil pan!! After quite a bit of work I managed the oil pump loose and the whole thing came down. I know I got it off I should be able to get it back on. Is there possibly a different oil pan that will work in this application that doesnt force me to go through the oil pump ritual if I ever need it off in the future? I know I will still fight the headers, I can deal with that. Any help is appreciated!

Todd

You are stuck, plain and simple. I had to do the same thing with my 460 in a lowboy, except there was not enough room for the pan to clear the oil pump itself because of the cross member. I rekon you could remove the baffle, or switch to an oil pump that the pickup bolts to (if such a monster exists for the FE) OR buy an expensive aftermarket pan that still has no baffle. The only reason why I had to remove my pan was because I dropped the distributor drive shaft into the motor. When I did it again, I came up with a okie way of fishing the shaft back out, instead of dropping the pan. My vote is to leave good enough alone, unless you plan on taking the pan off on a regular basis.

I considered the raising of the motor off the frame too. I was hoping maybe some oakie put a pan from a pass. car instead of a truck or something? I dont plan on removing the pan after reinstall, just nice to know you can!

Thanks, Todd

It would be a lot better to use a 4X4 Pan then a car pan! I hope it isn't close to your front diff!? Sounds to me its the wrong pan! Good Luck!!!!

I dunno what pan I got? It is a rear sump pan, there is absolutely no danger of it ever hitting the diff. I am FE ignorant, first one ever. Just cant believe the pan wont come down without a major pain in the A##. Sounds like maybe it is the way it is and that is that?

it is a pain. i have to do al of the above: jack up motor, loosen pan, drop oil pump.etc putting the pump back in with the pan in place is the trickiest part. small, nimble hands and a good set up stubby wrenches helps.
