I think you need to find that clicking. Probably a bad relay, maybe for the PCM. May have to pull the radio to get to it. I think it's replacable once you find it. If it's blinking the dash lights and your batteries are for sure good, then the relay would be my next guess.
That's the first place I would start. Try finding out what the code is and go from there. You'll need a scanner that is compatible with the Powerstroke, or take it to a diesel shop that can scan codes.
This is the first thing I would do.

I had the exact same symptoms last year. The truck would die and the gauges would go go all over the place, it ended up being a bad battery. Have them tested just rule that out.
alright guys i think i found the problem. took out the banks chip and now starts and runs like a champ (so far), quite a bit slower without the chip though. is there any way to find out what kind of tune was on the chip? really would like to get a similar one cause i liked the power i was getting out of it. thanks
Dont worry about the banks chip... More or less its a waste of $... Do yourself a favor and give Jody a call over at DP tuner... They build custom chips that are made for you truck..
i see most people getting the 80hp econo tune from DP, does anybody know the torque gain with that?
What kind of question is that? What kind of torque were you getting before? Don't know do you? So why do you ask? I will answer by saying you ought to see over 600 in a stock truck with intake and exhaust mods. Of course all this depends on the health of your HPOP.
Not sure where you are going here but Banks stuff is notoriously overpriced and inadequate. If it is a rotary **** switch, you might check into Tony Wildman at TDP for an upgrade. He can tune a truck too and you wouldn't need a new chip.
obviously i dont know what torque i am putting out. but i do know that torque is what gets these trucks moving so i dont think its such an unreasonable question of curiosity.
VERY generally speaking... I know that my bully dog claimed twice as much torque then the horsepower.... So if i had it on 100hp tune i was looking at a 200tq gain... Most "out-of-the-box" tuners/programmers tend to claim similar ratings.... twice as much tq vs. horsepower

OK, fair enough. Forget about torque. You need to concern yourself with HP. Torque comes with larger displacement engines and is a magical #. Horsepower is what gets you moving and accelerating. Torque is a calculated value, a twisting mechanical advantage. This can be changed by gearing but HP is HP. It is there or it isn't. A higher torque engine will not outrun a higher HP engine in most cases. That is probably why tuners advertise HP gains over torque increases. That was all I was trying to say and not trying to bash you, just wasn't sure where you were going with it.
Hey guys,
I'd like to go back to the dash clicking. Just got my 01 last week and it ran fine. The last owner said that it never was chipped. Snowing and blowing for the last few days. Went out at noon today and it ran fine. Went to leave this evening and started to click and won't start. I checked all the fuses. I had a "no start" problem with my 96 and it ended being a bad fuel heater (was blowing the big fuse under the hood). When I unplugged the under dash fuse for the fuel heater, the clicking stopped, the wait to start wouldn't light up and still no start. I haven't been able to fine the relay that is clicking yet, could this be a shorted fuel heater again that hasn't blown the fuse yet?
Bigcab, do you still have the original batteries? A clicking relay is usually a sign of low voltage. Check the battery connections and make sure they're clean and tight. If the fuel bowl heater shorted out, you wouldnt get a WTS light.
When my batteries got too weak to start the truck, that relay would chatter away. A set of motorcraft 850cca batteries from the dealer solved it.
If the battery posts are clean and tight, try getting a jump start. If that works, I'd put money on the batteries finally going south. It takes a lot of juice to crank over a ice cold PSD.
