Well my truck is finally back from the shop... I asked them to run the codes and they confirmed the upstream o2 sensor is kicking on causing the truck to run rich as hell. I suppose thats why when i want it to kick down it bogs alittle then kicks down...
Well I am wondering if there is any special tool needed to replace it. Also for those of you who have done these are there any tips or tricks and where is the cheapest you have found?
eBay is cheapest if you have time to wait for one to come up and for the bid to end. Otherwise they're about $50-60. Removing and replacing this thing is about the easiest thing you'll ever do. Spray it with liquid wrench or whatever is you favorite loosening lube and then get yourself a big ole crescent wrench. If it really gets stuck you can break off the body of the thing and get a rachet on it.
They are usually pretty straight forward to replace. They make a special O2 socket that is cut out for the wire once disconnected. I usually just use a 6 sided boxend wrench with a pry bar. Be sure to spray with WD40 or Blaster Penetrant first to loosen up the rust and crud first.
Alot of times you can remove the O2 sensor and clean it up, reinstall it and it will be fine. I've done this with several trucks i've had, and only one of them actually needed replaced. Gasoline and steel wool works well. Might be worth a try before you spend the money.
The part of an O2 sensor that matters (the ceramic) is shrouded with metal shield, so steel wool wouldn't help it sense any better. Gas is probably not a good idea either, but if it worked for you...
All the O2 sensors I have ever bought for my truck were right around $40 at Advance or Autozone for a Bosch sensor that was the same as OEM. The newer 4-wire sensors may be more expensive, though; my truck uses a 3-wire sensor. I use a plain 7/8" box end wrench to remove and install the O2 sensors, and have never had any trouble.
