I know this is too simple, but make sure you have adequate water/antifreeze in the cooling system. Mine did the same thing when it had no water, with both front and rear.
My '01 Ram did the same thing once when it was low on coolant...no heater. Added coolant and it worked fine...
It would be a purging of air in the system.
Just looking at the coolant reservoir level would give you a false sense of what is really the correct level.
Easy fix if this is the case.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll get on it after Christmas. And, since you asked, it's going to be nearing 80 degrees here today. ( yuch) Which is another reason I'm not concerned about the heater today. However last week we actually had 3 + inches of snow....not much for you, but we only get a dusting every 4 or 5 years or so. Not sure it ever got below 33 though. Need the heater to knock the chill off and to defrost the windows, otherwise I can live without it. Just don't let the AC go out! We use that pretty much year round.
OK heres my issue. I just bought a 98 Expy eddie and i got it for cheap because the heat wasnt working. but now that i see it can be numerous things going wrong i just wanted to get some input.
heat does not work, when i turn on anything i smell antifreeze (but no green pool of death on the floor), the temp does not come all the way to the middle when the truck is warmed up (but the guy said the t-stat was replaced already), the heat also in the back barely works (its warmer than the front but definetly not warm at all) PLEASE HELP!!!
If you're smelling AF then the heater core is leaking and needs to be replaced. The previous owner might have put stop leak in just to patch it up for the sale. The stop leak could've plugged up the rear heater core as well. The problem with the gauge could be a bad sender unit.
thanks. just making sure thats what i'd need my mechanic to fix before i have him take apart anything and then theres more issues that i couldn't get fixxed. thanks again for the help. now i'll be burning 700 for the core to get fixxed
also just found out while i was feelin around in the engine that the coolant is low as hell and the hose commin from the radiator is soft like theres no pressure going thru it. and another question, is the fan suppost to stay on? other cars ive had the fan has never permanently stayed on???
Ok i finally got the heater core replaced and i have front heat but NO rear heat now. No smell of AF from the rear since i replaced the front core though. could it be the rear core is clogged or what? hook me up w/ some info please... thanks guys
Since both cores were the same age it's likely they both were in the same condition. On a positive note, the rear core could just be air bound since you just had the system open. Maybe a trip down the highway will burp it for you. Just remember to check your AF level after the drive.

welp hopefully the drive back from GA to MD will assist me in gettin the air out. hopefully thats all it is. if it doesn't work should I just replace the rear one too? it doesn't smell like its leaking so idk if its really done for or not.. also how do you get the residual AF smell out of the vent system? my heat is working awsome but still a faint smell of AF thats just annoying lol

Yes, if getting the air out doesn't help it would be best to just replace the rear core.
AF doesn't evaporate like water does. Either you wait it out or you go in and try to clean it out of there.
Pull your blower motor out and get the heater box clean as possible. Shop vac excess fluids out.
Spray with an alcohol based cleaner to "degrease" everything within reach.
I have used Tough Stuff and Simple Green. It smells better than brake cleaner and won't harm plastic.
If the vents are greasy than it's a bear of a job to pull the blend door assy.
Ok so its been a while and well pretty much if i turn the rear heat on at all it drains my AF level so i assume the rear is leaking as well... other than that now the front heat works but its not really blowing hot, more like room temp, sometimes it gets hot(ish) but most of the time its room temp feeling (which is still better than no heat but its just not where i want it to be. the Temp gauge isn't really in the middle, more like 1/4 above the cold line... Any ideas???
