Good question, and I'm looking forward to seeing some other replies. Back in '01 I rebuilt the top end of the 460 in my Torino, and used a valley pan with my Weiand Stealth intake, with no ill results. Since then, I've read that a person SHOULDN'T use a valley pan with a Stealth intake. Dunno why, or even if that advice applies to any aluminum intake manifold.

The valley pan is a good idea, but in my experience it is a pita to get it to align correctly. It likes to move around a lot when trying to get everything lined up.
