Can't Find Fuel Leak

Here's what's happening. I replaced caps orings rubber lines, because I saw fuel leaking around injector nuts and was having a hard time starting it if it sat more than a day. Once I replaced them it worked great for a while (only drive the truck probably once a week) Then I smelled a strong diesel smell in the cab and outside the truck appears to be stronger on the passenger's side. Opened the hood and saw back passenger injector squirting fuel again replaced orings problem fixed. Continued to smell fuel even after a few days. So I cleaned the motor real good and ran it about 50 miles. Fuel smell is back, but I can't find the leak. Any suggestions on places to look would be great. BTW the smell gets stronger if the A/C is on. This leak is realy starting to frustrate me

Do you see fuel laying anywhere?

No fuel laying anywhere and no drips, that I can find. If it is dripping it's not doing it consistently and it's not making it to the ground. It looks asif it's somewhere around the passenger tire, but not sure. Just thinking here...is it possible it's only leaking when the rpms are up ie. driving. It's wearing me out

It is very possible.
I would think you would see some wetness somewhere right after driving though.

I was half way through typing that when I thought about the weather outside.
I think mine is wet all over right now from rain.

Well it's south Florida no matter what the weather it's gonna change within 5 minutes. The frame appears as if it has diesel on it. I guess I could clean it off again let it dry and then go drive a few miles and then recheck it. If it coming from around there any ideas where it's coming from

Take a good look around the IP area for fuel. Also check along the frame rail from the tank to the engine.

Leaks can be hard to find sometimes. The best way to find a leak, that is tough to determine, is to get some tracer dye for engine oil. Fill your fuel filter with dyed fuel and run the motor. You can also mix it in your fuel tank. Use a black light and you will find the leak.

Been finding fuel leaks for years this way. Generally you can fill the filter up and it will show up.

Use the dye for motor oil. Not the dye for "fuel".

This most likely won't be helpful but last year my dad changed the caps and O rings on the return lines. Looked like there was no problem, truck ran good.

A few months later he went on a couple hundred mile trip and started to smell fuel. One of the new caps had a small crack. I checked it a while later and found one other cap that had just started leaking, again a small crack.

These were parts from a kit that he got from a diesel shop.

Lesson learned on that one. Keep the old caps with the truck, never know when they might come in handy out on the road.

I finally found the fuel leak. It's was the back left orings only leaked when rpms up. Went out earlier with help fired it up no leak washed down again lokked again no leak. Father in law pushed pedal and it began to leak. This will be the third set of rings from the kit that went bad. FIL seems to think they were dry rotted. Have to go to the dealership for more rings. Town's thirty miles away. So he said he'd pick them up for me this afternoon. Has any one else gotten bad rings in their kit. out of the sixteen rings I put on six have been bad others seem fine.

Did you lube the caps and O rings real good before snapping the caps into place? Pushing caps on too dry can mess up O rings. I suppose the ones you got could have been laying on the shelf for a few years.

I think that was my dads problem. He used a small amount of lube on the O rings, shoved real hard on the caps and two of them split. When I checked and fixed, I slathered up the caps and O rings, snapped em in place and he mentioned "they didn't go on that easy for me" and " I didn't use that much lube on them"

Here's a couple of other tips/tricks. Inspect all of the return caps. They should all be seated the same depth. If any look like they're riding high, they're not seated properly.

With the engine running, spray some non-flammable penetrating oil on the injector threads, where they screw into the head. If any bubbles appear, the injector crush washer is not sealed to the head. You'll want to fix any leaker's asap. It'll ruin the inj in very short order.

Thanks, I lubed them when I put them on. Dealership won't have em until Monday afternoon. They were bad split all the way through. I don't think I cut putting them on, due them being brittle and just breaking when I took them off. Hope this is the last ones I'll have to put on for a while.

Big trick to O rings lasting a long time, take care to not disturb them once installed.

The hot return line fuel makes the O rings hard.
If they are disturbed, they don't seal again.

ok I have two injectors on the left (paasenger) side I have to replace for a total of four o rings, based on the disturbing principle, should I replace all o rings on the left side? or just replace the two injectors.

If you bought a kit you have them all if not orings are cheap all of them as you cant replace one without moving the next one and after they have hot they are not pliable enough anymore and will leak.
