Hi everyone. I have a little problem. I own a 1991 F-250 with anti-lock brakes. My problem is this: it only works when it feels like it. Sometimes my amber anti-lock brake light will come on and they won't work, I have to push the pedal really far down to stop. Sometimes, it goes off, and they do work, I have a better, firmer pedal feel. Sometimes the light will come on and I will have the firm pedal feel. Sometimes it will be off and I will have the soft feel. Sometimes, I have the soft feel until I stop a couple times then it is firm. I am ready to start replacing my ABS electrical components(rear ABS sensor, hydraulic control valve, and the ABS control module). I was just wondering if anyone had any advice.
From my experience Anti lock brakes do not do anything and are worthless. I tried to see if my anti-lock brakes would work in my 90 bronco II and locked up the brakes on some ice and snow and worked and then the light came on and they stopped working. The light stayed on all winter without any brake problems, just no ABS. You may have a more of a brake problem going on. You might want to start checking the brakes and looking for leakling wheel cylinders and cracked hoses and just looking for general leaks. Also check your master cylinder to make shure it is full. If nothing, Then I would start blaming the ABS system. My light eventually went off after a while. I think I unhooked the battery for a while and hooked it back up and it took care of the problem.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
Check the "tone ring" on the differential carrier if your truck is so equipped. By pulling the ABS sensor from the diff housing, you may be able to use a mirror to check for broken teeth on the ring. At least that's what I found on my truck. Good Luck.
